Available Domain
Names
Canadian domain names are usually suffixed with a ".ca." Though most of
the domains are used, there is still a wide variety of available domain
names and combinations for the ".ca" domain. Though it is not an
absolute rule for Canadians to have a ".ca" when creating their domains
or hosts in Canada, firm owners and users are encouraged to use this as
a standard. After all, the reason for this plan of action is utmost
accessibility and efficient grouping of Canadian domains in the World
Wide Web. As people all know, the World Wide Web covers a huge scope of
information, addresses, and groups; as such, domains which belong to
similar groups or areas are encouraged to follow the standard naming
conventions of domain names.
Initially, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)
is one of the global references for available domain names. Because of
its reputation, the company is the main registrar and reference when
trying to look for available names. In 2000, however, a new registrar,
CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Authority) was established to be
able to create a convention of domain names. Compared to ICANN and other
registrars, CIRCA was less lenient. This proved to be an effective
method, indeed, because after rules were implemented in 2000, all
Canadian citizens, residents and businesses are able to readily to
acquire domains with ".ca" extension. From 2000 onwards, it has then
been an established condition for Canadians who plan to inquire on
available domain names to direct their inquiries and concerns to the
CIRA Canadian Office.
